Systems Optimisation Engineer

Due to continued growth within their Water & Wastewater Capital Delivery business, our client is seeking an experienced Systems Optimisation Engineer to support the successful operation and optimisation of clean water networks across the London and Thames Valley region.

This is a key technical role within the Network Operations Team, responsible for investigating network performance issues, analysing operational data and delivering practical solutions that improve resilience, customer service and network efficiency. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining water supply performance, reducing risk and supporting long-term infrastructure improvements across a major water utility contract.

Key Systems Optimisation Engineer Responsibilities

• Investigate and resolve low-pressure incidents, customer complaints and critical network alarms.
• Monitor DMA and District Meter availability, ensuring network performance issues are identified and addressed promptly.
• Develop and implement data-driven solutions to improve operational efficiency and network resilience.
• Support valve operations, mains flushing activities and wider clean water network interventions.
• Produce risk assessments and operational documentation for activities impacting the water network.
• Support outage planning and ensure all activities comply with asset management procedures and operational standards.
• Analyse network trends including head loss, low flows, supply resilience and water quality performance.
• Review operational data to identify opportunities for network optimisation and performance improvement.
• Maintain and update hydraulic schematics and network records to support future operational planning.
• Collaborate with operational teams, stakeholders and technical specialists to ensure effective delivery of network improvement initiatives.
• Promote safe systems of work and compliance with company and client procedures.

Essential Experience & Skills as a Systems Optimisation Engineer

• Proven experience within water network operations, distribution or clean water infrastructure environments.
• Strong understanding of network activities including valve operations, mains flushing and permit compliance.
• Knowledge and practical experience of Permit to Work systems.
• Ability to analyse operational data and identify practical solutions to network performance issues.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a methodical approach to fault finding.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Good understanding of health, safety and operational compliance requirements within the water sector.
• Ability to work independently whilst supporting wider operational and engineering teams.

Desirable

• Experience using GIS mapping software.
• Knowledge of hydraulic modelling and network analysis tools.
• Previous experience working within a water utility or water infrastructure contractor environment.
• Understanding of pressure management strategies and clean water network optimisation.
• Experience working on Thames Water or similar UK water utility frameworks.
