Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Mechanical Fitter Location: Rochdale Hours: Monday to Friday (days), with some Saturday work required
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Mechanical Fitter to join our client’s team in Rochdale. This is a hands-on role within a busy heavy/medium engineering environment, responsible for ensuring machinery reliability, minimising downtime, and supporting both preventative and reactive maintenance activities.
The role involves varied engineering tasks including routine servicing, breakdown response, fabrication, and project work — all carried out in compliance with ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001, and other relevant standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine servicing and inspection on production machinery, mechanical systems, and equipment.
- Use preventative maintenance systems (PPMs) to reduce breakdowns and unplanned downtime.
- Support and lead repairs on gearboxes, motors, pulleys, couplings, fans, pumps, mixers, bearings, rollers, etc.
- Perform essential legislative testing of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Support fabrication, welding (MIG/MMA essential; TIG desirable), milling, and turning tasks.
- Carry out hydraulic and pneumatic maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain and repair LEV systems (filter media changes, duct cleaning).
- Log work orders, complete PPMs, and ensure accurate use of Pirana or similar CMMS systems.
- Assist the Engineering Manager with projects, upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives (CIP).
- Liaise with external contractors as required.
- Ensure essential spare stock levels are maintained and manage stores.
- Adhere to Health & Safety procedures at all times.
- Maintain good housekeeping and ensure IHASCO training modules remain up to date.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Recognised trade apprenticeship and ONC, HNC, or City & Guilds qualification.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar mechanical maintenance role.
- Hydraulic and pneumatic system knowledge.
- MIG and MMA welding skills (TIG beneficial).
- Background in heavy/medium engineering.
- Lifting and slinging experience.
- Computer literate – Microsoft Office and PPM systems (e.g., Pirana).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Flexible approach to overtime, shutdown work, and call-out cover.
- Able to step into the role quickly with minimal supervision.
Preferred (Not Essential)
- Web handling / textiles or paper industry experience.
- Turning experience.
- IPAF qualification (working at heights).
- Basic electrical knowledge.
- Forklift truck licence.
- ATEX awareness/experience.
- Gas burners / Gas Safe registered.
