FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the Wastewater industry for an experienced Senior/Principal Design Engineer – Mechanical to strengthen their team.
This role is based in Falmer, Brighton

Senior/Principal Design Engineer – Mechanical role:
- You will report directly to the Principal Engineer and be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering design services that support the company in minimising risk and maximising profitability across turnkey and engineering service contracts. You will coordinate all aspects of the design process and produce comprehensive design documentation and drawings, ensuring full compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, specifications, and industry standards.
Senior/Principal Design Engineer – Mechanical responsibilities:
- Develop cost-effective design layouts that meet all specification requirements and can be efficiently constructed and commissioned. Cost-effectiveness should account for the total lifecycle cost, including design time, materials, installation, and any impacts on other disciplines.
- Apply standard design practices wherever possible to maintain efficiency and competitiveness and provide accurate estimates and feedback to the Proposals Department.
- Follow established procedures and processes to support the ongoing improvement and development of the department.
- Contribute to the creation, monitoring, and review of departmental procedures and processes to ensure continuous efficiency and consistency.
- Prepare, update, and maintain effective procedures that support the smooth operation of the department.
- Coordinate design activities with all internal and external disciplines to ensure a fully integrated and collaborative approach that benefits the overall project.
- Maintain organised files and records throughout the duration of each contract.
- Maintain and actively work on a personal development plan to support professional growth.
- Support the supervision, mentoring, and development of junior staff within the team.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for all employees, ensuring that all designs fully comply with relevant health and safety requirements.
- Minimise waste across all departmental operations and ensure that designs consider and address environmental sustainability.
Senior/Principal Design Engineer – Mechanical requirements:
- Understand the principles of water and sewage treatment
- Have experience of managing/mentoring members of staff in designing relevant discipline aspects of water and sewage treatment plants
- Membership of a professional institution chartered or nearing chartership
- Preferable: – relevant discipline Engineering degree
- Minimum:- relevant discipline Engineering HND
- Ability to rationalise designs and produce economic plant layouts
- Good general knowledge of all aspects of water treatment, e.g. mechanical engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering and project management
- A flexible mind, with the ability to assimilate large amounts of different data at one time
- Ability to present technical proposals clearly, confidently and convincingly
- Driving license
