Job Description

FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the utilities industry for an experienced Principal Engineer – Mechanical.
 
Location: Exeter, hybrid working available.

Principal Engineer – Mechanical role:

  • Report directly to the Regional Engineering Lead or Regional Discipline Lead, delivering high-quality engineering design services that help the company minimise risks and maximise profits on turnkey and engineering service contracts.
  • Manage the design process and generate documentation and drawings that align with health and safety regulations, contract specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Create design layouts that are cost-effective, meet specification requirements, and are practical to construct and commission. This includes considering all associated costs—such as design time, materials, installation, and impacts on other disciplines—to ensure an efficient overall solution.
  • Provide estimates and input to support the Proposals department.
  • Follow, develop, and regularly review procedures to support the department’s continuous improvement and efficient operation.
  • Maintain accurate files and records for the duration of each contract.
  • Maintain a personal development plan and support the supervision and development of staff.
  • Promote a safe work environment, minimise departmental waste, and ensure designs meet health, safety, and environmental standards.

Principal Engineer – Mechanical requirements:

  • Extensive experience in designing complex process systems.
  • Experience in managing staff responsible for designing relevant aspects of water and sewage treatment plants.
  • Membership in a professional institution or chartered status.
  • A relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience and training.
  • Ability to optimise designs and create cost-effective plant layouts.
  • Strong general knowledge of all water treatment aspects, including mechanical, process, and electrical engineering, as well as project management.
  • Driving license
