FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the Wastewater industry for an experienced Senior/Principal Engineer – Civil to strengthen their team.
This role is based in Falmer, Brighton, with hybrid working available

Senior/Principal Engineer – Civil role:
- Reporting directly to the Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for providing high-quality engineering design solutions that support the company in minimising risk and maximising profitability across turnkey and engineering service contracts.
- You will oversee and coordinate all stages of the design process, producing comprehensive design documentation and drawings while ensuring full compliance with applicable health and safety regulations, specifications, and industry standards.
Senior/Principal Engineer – Civil responsibilities:
- Develop cost-effective design layouts that meet all specification requirements while ensuring constructability and ease of commissioning. Cost-effectiveness should consider the total project expenditure, including design time, materials, installation, and any cross-discipline impacts.
- Apply standard design practices wherever possible to maintain efficiency and competitiveness, while providing accurate estimates and feedback to the Proposals Department.
- Contribute to the creation, refinement, and review of departmental procedures and processes, ensuring they remain effective and up to date.
- Prepare, update, and oversee efficient departmental procedures to promote smooth and consistent operations.
- Maintain accurate files and records throughout the duration of each contract.
- Maintain an up-to-date personal development plan and actively support the supervision and development of junior staff.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for all team members and ensure that health and safety requirements are fully integrated into all design activities.
- Minimise waste across all departmental activities and ensure designs consider environmental sustainability and best practices.
Senior/Principal Engineer – Civil requirements:
- Strong understanding of the principles of water and wastewater treatment.
- Proven experience in managing and mentoring team members involved in the design of water and wastewater treatment plant systems.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution, with Chartered status or working towards chartership.
- Minimum: HND in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Ability to optimise and rationalise designs to produce efficient and cost-effective plant layouts.
- Broad knowledge across key areas of water treatment, including mechanical, process, and electrical engineering, as well as project management.
- Flexible and analytical mindset, capable of processing and interpreting complex technical information.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to deliver technical proposals clearly, confidently, and persuasively.
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
