Job Description
FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the utilities industry for an experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer to strengthen their team.
This role is based in Falmer, Brighton, with hybrid working available.

Principal Electrical Design Engineer role:
- Reporting directly to the Regional Design Lead (RDL), you will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering design services that help the company minimise risk and maximise profitability across turnkey and engineering services contracts.
- You will coordinate all aspects of the design process, produce detailed design documents and drawings while ensure full compliance with health and safety requirements, contract specifications, and relevant industry standards.
Principal Electrical Design Engineer responsibilities:
- Develop cost-effective design layouts that meet all specification requirements and can be efficiently constructed and commissioned.
- Apply standard design practices and methodologies wherever possible.
- Maintain a competitive approach in all design activities.
- Provide accurate estimates and technical feedback to the Proposals department.
- Adhere to departmental procedures and processes to support continuous improvement and development.
- Contribute to the creation and refinement of departmental procedures and processes.
- Regularly monitor, review, and update procedures to ensure efficiency and consistency.
- Ensure effective coordination of designs with all other internal and external disciplines to deliver cohesive and integrated project outcomes.
- Maintain comprehensive and well-organised project files and records throughout each contract.
- Strive to achieve and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Promote a culture that recognises customer satisfaction—both internal and external—as essential to achieving wider business objectives.
- Maintain and update a personal development plan to support ongoing professional growth.
- Assist in supervising, mentoring, and developing junior team members.
- Support and uphold a safe working environment for all employees.
- Minimise waste across all departmental activities and encourage sustainable working practices.
- Incorporate environmental considerations into all design work.
- Ensure that all designs fully comply with relevant health and safety legislation and best practice standards.
Principal Electrical Design Engineer requirements:
- Strong understanding of the principles and processes involved in water and wastewater treatment.
- Proven experience in leading and managing teams responsible for designing discipline-specific elements of water and sewage treatment plants.
- Full membership of a recognised professional institution.
- Chartered Engineer status.
- Minimum: HND in a relevant engineering discipline with extensive related experience.
- Ability to rationalise complex designs and develop cost-effective, practical plant layouts.
- Broad technical knowledge across multiple disciplines, including mechanical, process, electrical engineering, and project management within the water sector.
- Flexible and analytical mindset, capable of processing and interpreting large volumes of technical data.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical proposals clearly, confidently, and persuasively.
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
